Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Pale blue tin glaze: English delftware production of the mid to late 18th century.
Hand-painted pastoral landscape in cobalt: free brushwork and sponged trees of the period.
Flaked rim glaze exposing buff earthenware: typical behaviour of soft tin glaze over time.
Three kiln support marks on the reverse: traditional 18th-century firing methods.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

These Georgian decorative plates date from the eighteenth century and are made of earthenware with a tin glaze and cobalt pigment finish. The pieces measure 2.5 cm high, 23 cm wide, and 23 cm deep. Hand-painted in blue and white, the round objects display pastoral landscape scenes featuring a lady on a bank pointing towards classical arch ruins, accompanied by a shepherd holding a staff, alongside hand-painted trees and cobalt border accents. Both circular ceramics exhibit minor edge chips, surface hairline cracks, and slight glaze crazing indicative of age, resting side by side upon a dark wooden surface. Suitable for placement above a sideboard in an English country house interior, the items offer authentic historical character for display.

English Delftware was produced from the seventeenth through the eighteenth century in centres such as London, Bristol, and Liverpool. Created as an accessible alternative to imported Chinese porcelain, it featured opaque white tin glaze decorated with cobalt oxide paint.

Delftware was formed from earthenware clay covered with a lead glaze containing tin oxide, which created an opaque white surface when fired. Artisans painted designs onto the unfired tin glaze using mineral pigments, predominantly cobalt blue, before a single final firing.

Authentic pieces display characteristic edge wear or fritting where the fragile tin glaze chips away from the earthenware body. Key indicators include pinholes in the glaze, lightweight earthenware bodies, hand-painted brushwork variations, and an unglazed or lightly glazed reddish clay rim base.

Decorative plates can be mounted in symmetrical wall arrangements above sideboards or mantlepieces to create a focal point. They can also be displayed on plate stands within traditional dressers, bookshelves, or alcoves to complement classic wood furniture.

Clean tin-glazed earthenware gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or light dusting brush. Avoid submerging antique ceramics in water or using liquid detergents, as moisture can penetrate existing glaze cracks and degrade the porous earthenware body beneath.
