Antique Afshar Tribal Rug, Neiriz Region, Kerman Province, South Persia.

19th century
Description

This early Afshar rug, probably second half 19th century, has an ivory ground comprising the 'dragon & phoenix' design in stylised form and symbolising the fight between good and evil.

The Afshar tribes originated in eastern Turkistan and arrived in Persia with the Ghuz migrations, sometime between the 11th and 15th centuries bringing their dragon symbolism with them.

This rug is in very good overall condition albeit with some excellent minor restoration in places which I had carried out in Iran.

Size: 1.50m x 1.10m (4' 11" x 3' 7").

Date of Manufacture

Brian MacDonald Antique Rugs & Carpets has dated this Antique Afshar Tribal Rug to the 1870s.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1870s:
Natural dye palette: saturated indigo, madder red and saffron yellow.
Uneven wool tension across the field: typical of portable nomadic tribal looms.
Oxidised brown wool in the outlines: slow aging of iron-mordanted fleece.
Irregular knot structure on the reverse: village hand-knotting.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 1870 Persian tribal area rug originates from the Neiriz region in the Kerman province of South Persia. Hand-woven from wool and cotton, the textile displays a cream central field with geometric bird motifs in navy blue, coral and red, enclosed within a navy patterned multi-band border and finished with fringed ends at the top and bottom. The design incorporates stylized floral medallions and shows signs of minor restoration work. Measuring 150 cm high by 110 cm wide, this rectangular piece suits placements in various residential interiors following an English country house style. It functions effectively as a decorative floor covering in a study, hallway or reception room.

FAQs

Afshar rugs are hand-woven textiles created by the nomadic Afshar tribe of South Persia, primarily within the Kerman province. They are renowned for their geometric stylisations, stylized bird or animal motifs, and rich natural dye palettes featuring deep blues and terracotta tones.

These rugs are constructed using hand-spun wool pile woven onto a wool or cotton foundation. The wool is dyed using traditional plant-derived and mineral pigments, creating durable floor coverings with rich depth of colour.

Authentic pieces typically feature asymmetrical knotting, a sturdy weave structure, and geometric medallions or repeating animal motifs across the central field. Examination of the reverse side reveals slight irregularities in the hand-woven structure and natural dye variations known as abrash.

A tribal rug can anchor a contemporary living space by adding visual pattern, texture, and historical contrast beneath modern furniture. It pairs effectively with minimalist timber pieces, natural leather seating, and neutral decorative schemes.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting to prevent damage to the pile fibers. Rotate the rug annually to balance wear and light exposure, and use specialist rug cleaners for spot treatments or periodic deep cleaning.
