Size: 4ft 11in x 3ft 8in (150 x 113cm).

Antique Afshar Neriz rug with a small medallion and boteh design.

Circa 1900

A good example of a Afshar Neriz rug with the typical firm weave and depressed warp structure. The rug has a small central medallion on an ivory coloured ground which is surrounded by small birds. The main field is in dark indigo blue and is covered in small boteh. The borders are of a traditional Afshar design.

The rug is in fair condition with some wear and medium / low pile, there is wear to the side bindings. The condition is reflected in the price.

The rug is suitable for normal domestic use.

Afshar Neriz rugs are tribal carpets woven by the Afshar people around the Kerman region of south-east Persia. They are recognized for their geometric patterns, diamond medallions, and repeat motifs like the boteh, reflecting a blend of nomadic traditions and urban design influences.

These carpets are hand-knotted using hand-spun wool for the pile, secured onto a foundation of wool or cotton warp and weft yarns. The yarn is traditionally coloured with natural vegetable dyes, resulting in varied chromatic tones.

Authentic pieces show natural colour variations known as abrash, slight asymmetry in the hand-knotted weave, and a clear reverse pattern visible on the back of the rug where knots are exposed.
