Pair of Karaja Rugs

1900 - 1920
Description

Karaja rugs are known for their bright Heriz like colours and this pair shows the typical Karaja design of three medallions on a deep blue ground surrounded by a scattering of floral motifs that fill every available space. There are many poorer examples out there with the main factor being quality of colour. These have wonderful tones with the sublime light blue balancing the rich red and contrasting with the inky blue field. On one the blue switches to green in the middle of a medallion, a pleasing variation to the theme. They are not finely woven but they make up for this with their beautiful palette. For me they make any room you place them in with their balanced look and happy countenance.

Good condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from the Karadagh region in Northwest Persia, Karaja rugs are renowned for their geometric tribal designs, typically featuring a central hexagonal medallion flanked by two stepped latch-hook medallions set against an indigo or red field.

Hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile on a cotton or wool foundation, Karaja rugs feature rich shades derived from natural dyes, resulting in a durable and thick weave built for generations of use.

Authentic pieces display slight asymmetrical variations in their hand-knotted weave, saturated wool hues, and distinct geometric motifs, alongside visible hand-tied knots on the reverse side rather than a glued synthetic backing.

These bold geometric rugs introduce texture and colour contrast when placed alongside modern minimalist furniture, natural timber flooring, or classic leather seating in both traditional and contemporary settings.

Vacuum regularly using a suction-only setting without a rotating brush bar, rotate periodically to ensure even wear, treat spills immediately by blotting with a damp cloth, and employ professional rug conservators for deep cleaning.
