An etui is a small ornamental case used in the 18th century to hold small necessities such as tweezers, toothpicks, scissors, or scent bottles. In the Georgian era, these portable containers served as status symbols and functional accessories for the elite.

These pieces were typically constructed using natural tortoiseshell inlaid with gold or silver pique work, involving tiny pins and strips of metal pressed into heated shell to create intricate floral or geometric patterns.

Authentic pieces from the 18th century exhibit hand-cut silver mounts, natural variations in the mottled brown tortoiseshell under magnification, and traditional pin-inlay pique work without modern adhesives.

Such miniature objects are ideally placed on a library desk, mantelpiece, or glass display cabinet where their tactile surface and historical craftsmanship can be appreciated up close.

Tortoiseshell is organic and sensitive to extreme dryness, moisture, and direct sunlight, which can cause warping or cracking. It should be kept in a stable environment away from direct heat and cleaned only with a soft, dry cloth.
