Description

We are delighted to offer this stunning antique Victorian diamond brooch made c.1890.

The brooch is made from solid 14ct gold and in spectacular Victorian fashion. Featuring a crescent design, profusely decorated with fine old cut diamond of tapering sizes on a silver faced mount, the brooch is most certainly an attractive and distinguished in design.

Celestial jewellery was increasingly vogue during the Victorian era as renewed fascination of stars & heavens carried into fashion and goldsmithing. The crescent moon was a symbol of the Greek God Selene, representing of a feminine empowerment and change just like the phases of the moon.

In addition to such symbolism, insect designs also offer the perfect opportunity to display high level goldsmithing, with intricate and fine gold/silver mounts, curves and angles to ensure the diamonds dazzle in their finest light.

Owing to its silver front, the diamonds and its mount have a uniform chic appearance; lively and stylish yet not too ostentatious. This brooch most certainly makes for a distinguished and discerning choice to wear with a variety of clothing.

The reverse side of the brooch has a pin which allows it to be worn with jumpers, jackets or coats.

The brooch is unmarked as is common with articles of this period and as such we have tested it for gold indicating 14ct gold.

Not only would this piece make for an excellent collectable/display but also serves as a wonder piece of antique Victorian celestial jewellery to wear on special occasions, whether be it a party, ball or dinner. Certainly impressionable and distinguished, this piece would be a wonderful conversation starter and the perfect way to share your passion of history and antiques.

Diamond is known to be the birthstone of April.

All of our jewellery comes with a complimentary hard shell gift box with a velvet interior.

Crescent motifs gained immense popularity during the late 19th century, often symbolising the moon, growth, and female empowerment. These pieces were frequently given as tokens of affection or worn as fashionable daytime and evening accessories during the aesthetic and late Victorian periods.

Jewellery from this period was typically handcrafted in gold, often combined with silver settings on the face to enhance the brilliance of the diamonds. Gemstones were generally secured with grain settings or claw mounts, utilising hand-cut stones such as old mine or old European cuts.

Authentic pieces usually feature closed-back or foiled settings in earlier works, transitioning to open-backed settings by the late 19th century. Hand-cut facets, hand-carved metalwork, and traditional pin stems with C-clasps or tube hinges are key indicators of period manufacture.

Antique brooches offer versatile styling potential beyond traditional lapel placement. They can be pinned to silk scarves, velvet headbands, waistbands, or used to fasten heavy knit cardigans and tailored blazers for a sophisticated touch.

Preservation requires gentle cleaning using a soft brush, warm water, and mild detergent, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage historical metals and settings. Store pieces individually in fabric-lined boxes to prevent scratching against other items.
