Edwardian silver tea caddies reflect the refined social customs of the early 20th century, a period when afternoon tea remained a central ritual for the upper classes. These vessels were crafted to store precious loose tea leaves securely while displaying wealth and sophistication on the dining table or sideboard.

These caddies are traditionally crafted from sterling silver, often shaped using hand-raising, spinning, or stamping techniques. Details such as borders, finials, and hinges are meticulously soldered, and the interior is sometimes lined with wood or foil to preserve the aroma of the tea.

Authentic pieces are identified through clear hallmarks struck directly into the metal, indicating the assay office, the makers mark, the standard mark for sterling silver, and a date letter corresponding to the specific year of production. Weight, construction methods, and period-appropriate decorative motifs also provide strong indicators of age.

An antique silver tea caddy functions as a polished accent piece that introduces metallic contrast to contemporary shelving, sideboards, or coffee tables. Its reflective surface complements neutral palettes and adds a layer of historical interest to minimalist or eclectic spaces.

Antique silver should be cleaned infrequently using a specialised, non-abrasive silver polish to maintain its patina without removing the underlying metal. It must be stored in a dry environment away from direct sunlight and harsh chemicals to prevent tarnishing and corrosion.
