This sterling silver caddy spoon originates from the 1920s Danish Modern period, designed by Georg Jensen as a tea accessory. The piece exhibits a bright silver colour with a polished metallic finish, and the visual inspection reveals a wide shovel-shaped bowl, a tapered stem, and a handle edged with beaded relief moulding, alongside subtle surface tarnish and minor use marks. Measuring 11 cm in length and 3.5 cm in width, it is a compact serving utensil suited for display on a sideboard top or for use during afternoon tea service. Practical usage includes serving loose leaf tea from a caddy into a teapot, or handling condiments on a dining table or in a kitchen setting. The item brings a touch of mid-century modern design to contemporary interiors, combining functional utility with decorative appeal. The clean lines and tactile detailing make it an engaging addition to collections of antique silver or vintage tableware.

FAQs

A tea caddy spoon is a compact silver utensil engineered specifically to scoop loose tea leaves out of a tea caddy into a teapot. Emerging in the late eighteenth century, these spoons feature short handles and flared bowls shaped like shovels, leaves, or shells to comfortably navigate small storage tins.

Historically, caddy spoons were predominantly produced from solid sterling silver, electroplated nickel silver, or Sheffield plate. High-grade artisan examples frequently featured hand-hammered bowls, cast relief decoration, or engraved handles.

Danish silver spoons typically bear official silver purity hallmarks, such as three towers or standard decimal marks like 830S or 925S, beside official maker stamps. Authentic maker marks show crisp stamping, correct proportions, and refined edge finishes around the handle and bowl.

A silver caddy spoon can be styled alongside a modern tea preparation tray, placed atop a lacquered tea box, or displayed inside a glass shadow box alongside fine tableware. Its reflective surface and functional design make it a subtle accent piece for kitchens and dining spaces.

Clean silver utensils by hand using warm water and a mild washing-up liquid, immediately drying with a soft cloth to avoid water spotting. To remove oxidisation without wearing down intricate surface relief, apply a small amount of non-abrasive silver cream using a microfibre cloth.
