Georgian snuff boxes gained immense popularity during the 18th century as snuff-taking became a fashionable social ritual among the aristocracy and upper classes, prompting craftsmen to create highly ornate containers from precious metals, shell, and ivory.

These boxes were typically constructed using a combination of silver mounts, tortoiseshell, and finely carved mother-of-pearl lids, often featuring intricate hand-engraving, pique work, and precise joining techniques executed by skilled silversmiths.

Authenticity is determined by examining the quality of the hand-carved detailing, the presence of period-appropriate makers marks or silver hallmarks where applicable, natural patination, and construction methods consistent with 18th-century artisanal workshops.

These small collectable items look striking when displayed on a bookshelf, inside a glass-fronted cabinet, or placed thoughtfully on a desk or mantelpiece as a focal point of historical interest.

Preservation requires keeping the item away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, gently cleaning silver with a specialised non-abrasive cloth, and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that could damage organic shell materials.
