Rocking ink blotters became popular during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a practical desktop tool used to absorb excess ink from handwritten documents before the widespread adoption of ballpoint pens and drying agents.

Traditional blotters were typically crafted using a combination of precious metals such as sterling silver or silver plate for the upper chassis, paired with a wooden or weighted interior base and a replaceable strip of absorbent blotting paper.

Authentic pieces are identified by inspecting hallmark stamps for makers marks, assay office symbols, and date letters, alongside observing natural wear patterns and silver oxidisation consistent with age.

This piece can be styled as a functional desk accessory on a contemporary executive office desk, or displayed as a decorative object on a bookshelf or mantelpiece alongside other metallic objects.

Preservation involves regular dusting with a soft cloth, storing away from high humidity, and applying specialized silver polish sparingly and only when necessary to avoid wearing down hallmarks or thin plating.
