FAQs

Hall lanterns originated in large estates and townhouses during the 18th and 19th centuries, designed to illuminate entrance halls and vestibules before the widespread availability of gas and electric lighting.

Traditional lanterns are typically constructed using soldered or riveted brass, bronze, or copper frames fitted with hand-blown or flat glass panes, often featuring cast decorative elements such as finials and scrolling brackets.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-appropriate joinery, hand-cut glass with imperfections, natural oxidisation on the metal surfaces, and early wiring configurations if previously electrified.

A traditional lantern creates a striking focal point when hung in double-height entrance halls, stairwells, or transitional spaces, contrasting effectively against contemporary neutral walls.

Clean glass panes using a mild glass cleaner and soft cloth, while preserving the metal frame by dusting gently and avoiding abrasive polishes that strip historical patina.
