Victorian silver card cases emerged in the nineteenth century as essential accessories for high-society etiquette, used to present calling cards during social visits.

These cases were typically crafted from sterling or continental silver using techniques such as repousse, engine turning, hand engraving, and gilt lining.

Authenticity is determined by examining period hallmarks, makers marks, metal purity stamps, and the crispness of the hand-engraved ornamentation.

A vintage silver card case can be displayed on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or coffee table as a sophisticated desktop object or cabinet curiosity.

Preservation involves storing pieces in tarnish-resistant environments and cleaning them gently with specialised silver cloths while avoiding harsh abrasive polishes.
