Late 19th Century, after a Design by Jean Hauré for Château de St. Cloud.

The design for these wall lights, is based on the 18th century model by the maître-fondeur ‘Jean Hauré’, cast by ‘Forestier’ and chased by ‘Thomire’ for the Château de St. Cloud. In their book ‘Vergoldete Bronzen’, Hans Ottomeyer and Peter Pröschel note that this model of appliqué can be ascribed to Jean Hauré who delivered near identical works to the Garde-Meuble de la Couronne in 1787. Elsewhere it is noted that models of this design were cast by Forestier (either Pierre-Auguste Forestier (1755-1835) maître-fondeur-ciseleur or his brother Étienne-Jean Forestier) and chased by the Pierre-Philippe Thomire (1751-1843) for the Château de Saint-Cloud.

Date of Manufacture

Andrew Lovatt Antiques has dated these Gilt Bronze Wall Lights to the 19th Century.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French gilt bronze, often referred to as ormolu, involves applying a finely ground high-carat gold mercury amalgam to cast bronze, producing a rich and durable metallic lustre.

These pieces are crafted using traditional lost-wax or sand-casting methods in bronze, followed by hand-chasing to sharpen details and fire-gilding to finish the surface.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit crisp hand-chased detailing, heavier relative weight from solid bronze construction, natural patination in recessed areas, and traditional assembly methods like threaded pins or hand-cut screws.

Mounting them flanking a mirror, above a fireplace, or along a hallway introduces historical contrast, metallic warmth, and balanced ambient lighting to modern spaces.

Clean surfaces gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid chemical polishes, abrasive cleaners, or direct moisture, which can degrade the fragile fire-gilt finish.
