A George V capstan inkwell is a desktop writing accessory produced during the reign of King George V, spanning from 1910 to 1936. The term capstan refers to the distinctive tapered shape resembling the nautical device used for hoisting anchors.

These inkwells were typically constructed with a weighted base formed from sterling silver, often featuring inset panels of tortoiseshell, mother-of-pearl, or glass. The interior generally housed a removable glass or ceramic insert designed to hold liquid ink safely.

Authenticity is verified through hallmark stamps indicating the assay office, metal purity, and date letter. Additionally, genuine antique tortoiseshell displays natural organic grain patterns under magnification, unlike modern synthetic resins.

An antique inkwell functions well as a decorative accent on a home office desk, bookshelf, or mantelpiece. It pairs effectively with dark wood surfaces, leather blotters, and classic brass accessories to create a sophisticated focal point.

Sterling silver requires regular polishing with a non-abrasive cloth to prevent tarnish, whilst tortoiseshell should be kept away from direct sunlight and extreme heat to prevent warping. Avoid getting moisture on the organic shell material during cleaning.
