Novelty silver pin cushions gained immense popularity in late Victorian and Edwardian Britain, manufactured primarily by elite silversmiths such as Sampson Mordan & Co. These miniature figural pieces served both a utilitarian purpose in the sewing room and functioned as highly collectible desk ornaments.

These pieces are typically created from cast sterling silver, featuring finely chased feather details and hallmarks stamped directly onto the metal surface. The cushion component is traditionally stuffed with wool or sawdust and upholstered in silk, velvet, or plush fabric.

Authentic pieces bear clear silversmith punchmarks, such as the SM&Co sponsors mark, alongside assay office marks, date letters, and often a registration number (Rd number) stamped into the silver body. The casting quality is exceptionally sharp, with hand-chased feather texturing rather than mass-produced stamping.

These miniature collectables work best when displayed in small groupings on a mantelpiece, inside a glass-fronted cabinet, or atop a dressing table alongside other curiosities. Their metallic sheen and tactile velvet texture provide refined detailing to a curated interior scheme.

Silver components should be cleaned sparingly with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh abrasive polishes that can wear down the fine hallmarks and hand-chased details. Keep the velvet cushion dry and away from direct sunlight to prevent fading of the fabric and oxidation of the internal stuffing.
