Punch bowls became prominent in the late 17th century with the rise of punch as a popular social drink, evolving through the Georgian and Victorian periods into large, ornate display pieces used for formal entertaining.

These items are traditionally fashioned from sterling silver or high-grade silver plate, frequently created through techniques such as spinning, hammering, chasing, and repousse work by skilled silversmiths.

Authenticity is determined by examining maker marks, town assay office stamps, date letters, and monarch duty marks, alongside assessing the natural weight, construction seams, and patination of the silver.

Such pieces can be utilised as a reflective statement vessel on a dining table or sideboard, either left empty to highlight the polished metal surface or filled with seasonal foliage or glass baubles.

Maintain the item by storing it in a dry, tarnish-inhibiting environment, handling it with soft cloths or cotton gloves, and cleaning it sparingly with specialised non-abrasive silver polishes.
