FAQs

A mule chest evolved in the 17th and 18th centuries as a transitional piece of furniture that combined the traditional lift-lid storage of a coffer or blanket box with the convenience of lower drawers for smaller items.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from solid native timber such as English oak, utilizing traditional joinery techniques including frame-and-panel construction, hand-cut dovetails for the drawers, and pegged joints.

Authenticity is determined by examining the timber for period-appropriate tool marks, hand-beveled panels, historical shrinkage cracks, original or period-correct brass hardware, and the absence of modern machine-cut fastenings.

An antique mule chest works well as a functional coffee table, a practical hallway storage solution, or an end-of-bed blanket box, contrasting effectively against minimalist or contemporary decor schemes.

Preserve antique oak by maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight and heat sources, and periodically applying a microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the aged timber surface.
