A rushlight is a type of lighting device from the 17th to 19th centuries that utilized dried rushes dipped in animal fat or grease to provide inexpensive illumination in rural homes.

Rushlights were typically hand-forged by local blacksmiths using wrought iron, featuring a spring-loaded jaw mechanism to grip the rush and often incorporating a secondary socket for a tallow candle.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-hammered tool marks, uneven surfaces, period-appropriate oxidisation and wear, and traditional blacksmithing joinery rather than modern welding.

An antique rushlight serves as an excellent sculptural focal point on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side table, bringing texture and historical interest to minimalist or rustic schemes.

Preserve antique iron by keeping it in a stable, dry environment away from humidity, and occasionally applying a microcrystalline wax to protect the metal surface from rust.
