18th century
Sold 4 August 2025 · Antique and Unique
This “18th Century Oak Coffer” found a buyer.

Description

An early 18th century oak coffer with three panel front and a flat top, with an open till inside. The coffer has a lovely rich colour and patina and is raised on stile feet. An attractive piece of furniture offering useful storage space…

Condition: Overall this is in good condition, though as with most items of this age there are some areas of damage/wear. There are some areas of loss to the timber of the floor which have caused a couple of small holes. The hinges are not original but have obviously been on it a long time, and there are some old metal reinforcement straps to the lid. There are areas of wear to the lid, mainly on the back edge - please see the photos. I believe the front top rail has been replaced as the moulding doesn’t line through with that on the sides, and there is no evidence of a lock, but it has been very well done and blends in perfectly. There is some old worm damage to the back - we have treated it against woodworm as a precaution.

Mainland UK delivery (excluding the Scottish highlands) is included in the price - if you would like a quote for delivery elsewhere, or if you would like to collect the item yourself, please get in touch. Delivery of furniture usually takes between 7 and 21 days from order, though can sometimes take longer. If you need an item by a certain date please speak to us prior to ordering and we’ll try to help.

Date of Manufacture

Antique and Unique has dated this 18th Century Oak Coffer to the 18th Century.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

Coffers were among the most versatile and essential pieces of furniture in medieval and post-medieval households, primarily used for storing valuables, textiles, and documents before the widespread use of fitted wardrobes and drawers.

Authentic period coffers are traditionally constructed from solid English oak using frame-and-panel techniques with pegged mortise and tenon joints, designed to accommodate the natural expansion and contraction of timber over centuries.

Authenticity is assessed by examining hand-tool marks, hand-cut joinery, timber patination, natural oxidisation, and the presence of hand-wrought iron hinges or fixings rather than modern machine-cut screws.

A period wooden coffer provides practical storage while serving as a grounding architectural element, functioning effectively as an end-of-bed trunk, a hallway storage bench, or a living room coffee table to introduce textural contrast.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct heat sources, and occasionally applying traditional beeswax to nourish the timber without stripping the historic surface patination.
