Chinoiserie is a European decorative style originating in the 17th century that reflects Chinese artistic influences, typically characterised by intricate hand-painted motifs in gold on lacquered backgrounds.

These pieces are typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany or pine, finished with multiple layers of lacquer or resin, and decorated with hand-applied gold leaf or metallic paint.

Authentic pieces generally display natural craquelure, subtle signs of hand-craftsmanship, period-appropriate joinery such as dovetailing in the drawers, and genuine wear consistent with age rather than artificial distressing.

Position the piece against a neutral backdrop to allow the intricate gold artwork to stand out, pairing it with minimalist contemporary seating to create a striking contrast between old and new.

Keep lacquered furniture out of direct sunlight to prevent fading, dust gently with a soft dry cloth, and avoid using chemical cleaning agents or abrasive polishes which can damage the delicate finish.
