Swing-handled silver baskets became popular during the Georgian and Victorian eras, frequently utilised on dining tables for serving sugar, sweets, or small fruits, often featuring brightly coloured glass liners to protect the metal from acidic contents.

These pieces were typically crafted from sterling silver or silver plate using piercing, stamping, and casting techniques, combined with blown glass liners in cobalt blue, cranberry, or green hues.

Authentic pieces generally display legible hallmarks indicating the makers mark, assay office, and date letter, alongside period-appropriate construction methods such as hand-pierced lattices and traditional hinge mechanisms.

This type of decorative accessory can be displayed on a sideboard, coffee table, or open shelving to introduce metallic texture and a touch of historical contrast to contemporary spaces.

Silver should be cleaned infrequently using a non-abrasive polish specifically formulated for antiques, while the glass liner can be washed separately in warm soapy water, avoiding harsh chemicals or extreme temperature changes.
