Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A pair of late 19th-century French Louis XV style wall sconces, dating from 1880, brings a refined historic accent to the interior. Each three-branch piece comprises a central nozzle flanked by two symmetrical lower arms, all finished in a patinated silver plate over cast metal. The elaborate design includes dense Rocaille detailing, curved acanthus leaf scrolls, and vertically fluted candle nozzles. Visible details include heavily textured relief casting along the scrolling arms, pierced scrollwork brackets, and sculptural leaf finials atop each vertical shaft. Measuring 45 cm high, 30 cm wide, and 25 cm deep, these fixtures remain un-electrified and ready for professional wiring. They suit placement in a fireplace alcove, flanking a grand mirror, or providing ambient illumination in a dining room or hallway.

FAQs

Louis XV style wall sconces are characterised by Rococo design elements, including asymmetrical curves, scrolling acanthus leaves, and rocaille motifs. Designed in 18th-century France, these fixtures emphasise fluid, organic movement throughout their branches and backplates.

Traditional French wall sconces were cast in bronze or brass using lost-wax or sand-casting methods, followed by hand-chasing to refine surface detail. Castings were subsequently silver-plated or gilded to protect the metal and maximize light reflection.

Authentic examples demonstrate heavy cast weight, detailed hand-chiselled decoration on both the front and reverse, and natural surface oxidation. Wear around high-contact points often reveals the underlying warm brass or bronze base metal beneath the silver layer.

Wall sconces can be installed in pairs to flank a central mirror, artwork, or fireplace alcove to establish visual symmetry. Combining silver-plated fixtures with neutral modern plasterwork provides a balanced contrast between historical ornament and clean lines.

Remove surface dust regularly using a soft brush or microfibre cloth. Apply a specialized silver polish sparingly to maintain surface lustre, avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that could strip the silver plating or erase natural patination within recessed details.
