Description

This impressive 19th century Karabagh rug from the Western Caucasus has all the hallmarks one could wish for from a rug of this period. The handspun mountain wool is soft with a chunky pile. The dyes are all natural and have produced wonderful saturated colours. In particular, the yellows, greens and light blues are delightful. Note the dark brown wefts and plaited kilim at one end which all point to a weaving date in the last quarter of the 19th century. However, the most outstanding thing about this piece is the striking design. The central row of hooked diamond medallions is complemented on both sides by matching halved diamond medallions. The design feels archaic and very pure. There are very few filler ornaments. And there is a wonderful reciprocity in the interaction of the latch hooks. The ivory main border with a classic serrated leaf and 'wine glass' border is well drawn and typical of Karabagh rugs of this period. All in all, this is a fascinating rug with great presence. The condition is excellent. It has been professionally cleaned.

Date of Manufacture

Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this Antique Karabagh Rug to the 1880s.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Karabagh rugs originate from the mountainous Karabagh region in the South Caucasus, known for combining Persian, Caucasian, and Russian design influences with distinctive geometric medallions and rich colour palettes.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature hand-spun wool foundations and pile, dyed using natural vegetable and insect dyes, and constructed with symmetrical or asymmetrical knots.

Authenticity is identified through irregular knot counts, natural abrash colour variations in the wool, traditional tribal motifs, and authentic wear patterns consistent with age.

These textiles add textural warmth and historical contrast when layered over hardwood floors in contemporary living spaces, hallways, or studies.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without rotary brushes, professional specialist cleaning, and avoiding direct, prolonged exposure to harsh sunlight to protect natural dyes.
