Rocking blotters became popular during the 19th century as a functional desktop accessory used to absorb excess wet ink from handwritten documents before the widespread adoption of ballpoint pens and quick-drying inks.

These pieces were typically crafted using sterling silver, plated metals, or wood bases, often combined with textured paper or blotting fabric secured via a curved rocking mechanism designed for smooth movement across paper.

Authenticity is verified by examining hallmarks indicating the assay office, metal purity, and makers mark, alongside natural signs of age such as minor surface patination and wear on the functional blotting surface.

Placed on a home office desk, console table, or library bookshelf, it adds a touch of historical character and refined metallic texture while serving as a functional paperweight or display object.

Preservation requires regular dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and occasional careful polishing with a non-abrasive silver cleaner to prevent tarnish accumulation without removing the underlying metal.
