A beautifully made and very impressive antique burr walnut chest on chest of drawers. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1930’s.

The quality is superb, this has absolutely gorgeous burr walnut grain patterns, and it contains lots of storage space in the many drawers. It sits on cabriole legs with shell carving at the knees, there is also a pull out brushing slide that comes out from the centre. The tallboy, or chest on chest, emerged in late seventeenth-century England and gained immense popularity during the Queen Anne and Georgian periods as a practical solution for maximising vertical storage space in bedrooms.

Traditional tallboys are typically constructed using a carcase of secondary timbers like oak or pine, veneered with highly figured decorative woods such as burr walnut or mahogany, and assembled using hand-cut dovetail joints.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-correct joinery, such as hand-cut dovetails on the drawer linings, traditional wax finishes, hand-forged or cast brass hardware with appropriate patination, and timber shrinkage consistent with age.

A traditional wooden tallboy can serve as a striking focal point in a contemporary bedroom or hallway, contrasting clean modern lines with rich textures and providing functional storage without occupying excessive floor space.

Preserve antique walnut furniture by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer cracking, and maintain the finish by occasionally applying natural beeswax while avoiding synthetic silicone polishes.
