FAQs

Wine coasters became popular in the late 18th century to protect polished dining tables from moisture and scratches when passing wine bottles around the table. By the Edwardian era, production utilized advanced electroplating techniques to offer affordable luxury alongside traditional solid silver pieces.

These items typically feature a base metal such as copper or Britannia metal coated in a layer of silver via electroplating. Many historical examples also incorporate a turned wooden base underneath to provide stability and absorb condensation.

Authenticity is generally determined by examining maker marks, hallmarks, or electroplate stamps on the rim or base. Natural signs of age, such as fine surface scratches and uniform tarnish patterns, also help verify period manufacture.

These pieces can be utilized traditionally on a dining table or sideboard, or repurposed as decorative trays for holding small items like candles, matches, or keys on a coffee table or desk.

Clean the items periodically using a specialised non-abrasive silver polish and a soft microfibre cloth to remove tarnish without wearing down the thin silver layer. Store them in a dry environment away from direct sunlight and humidity.
