We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The French Empire style emerged during the early 19th century under Napoleons rule, heavily drawing inspiration from classical antiquity, including ancient Greece and Rome. It is characterised by grand motifs, symmetrical proportions, and a focus on military and imperial symbolism.

Authentic pieces from this period were typically crafted from cast bronze or brass, often featuring fire-gilding or ormolu finishes. Construction involved detailed metal casting followed by hand-chasing to refine the crisp decorative details.

Authenticity is assessed through the weight of the metal, the presence of hand-chasing marks rather than modern machine tooling, and the type of construction screws or fixings used on the backplate. Natural patination and oxidisation of the gilt surface over time also indicate age.

They work effectively when mounted against dark or textured walls to make the metallic finish stand out, serving as classical focal points in living rooms, hallways, or dining spaces. Pairing them with warm LED candle bulbs bridges the gap between historical aesthetics and modern electrical safety.

Preservation requires dusting gently with a dry, soft cloth and avoiding abrasive chemical cleaners that can strip the delicate gilt finish. Electrical wiring should be periodically checked by a qualified professional to ensure safety compliance.
