A Victorian propelling pencil is a mechanical writing instrument featuring an internal mechanism to advance and retract the lead, frequently produced by notable makers such as Sampson Mordan during the 19th century.

These writing instruments were typically crafted from sterling silver or gold, often incorporating semi-precious hardstones such as bloodstone, jasper, or cornelian set into the terminal as a wax seal.

Authentic pieces usually bear makers marks such as S. Mordan & Co stamped onto the metal casing, alongside assay office hallmarks indicating the metal standard and year of manufacture.

These objects suit display within desktop display cabinets, upon leather-bound writing desks, or arranged inside glass cloches alongside other desk accessories.

Silver should be cleaned gently with a non-abrasive polishing cloth to preserve hallmarks and surface engraving, while moisture and harsh chemical dips should be kept away from set hardstones.
