Edwardian novelty silver pin cushions gained immense popularity in the early 20th century, often manufactured by specialist silversmiths in Birmingham. These whimsical items, frequently cast as animals, were designed for the dressing tables of affluent households.

These items were typically produced using sterling silver sheet, which was pressed or hammered into steel dies and then hand-chased for detail. The upper section generally features a stuffed cushion upholstered in silk, velvet, or plush wool.

Authenticity is verified by locating clear hallmarks stamped on the silver body, indicating the makers mark, assay office, and date letter corresponding to the Edwardian period. Maker marks such as those by Adie & Lovekin are frequently encountered on animal subjects.

Antique silver miniatures work effectively when displayed in small groupings on a bookshelf, desk, or tray, providing metallic contrast and a touch of historical character to modern spaces.

Preservation requires storing pieces in low-humidity environments away from direct sunlight to protect the textile insert. Silver should be cleaned sparingly with a non-abrasive cloth, avoiding polish contact with the fabric cushion.
