Antique silver photo frames gained widespread popularity during the Victorian and Edwardian eras, coinciding with the mass accessibility of photography. Assay offices such as Chester played a crucial role in hallmarking these items to guarantee metal purity.

These pieces typically feature a thin sheet of sterling silver shaped over a wooden or composition core, often backed with velvet, watered silk, or wood, and supported by a hinged easel stand.

Authenticity is verified by checking for clear British hallmarks, which typically include a makers mark, the lion passant for sterling silver, the town mark for the assay office, and a date letter.

Such pieces add metallic sheen and historical contrast when placed on sideboards, mantelpieces, or desks alongside contemporary art and books.

Clean gently with a specialised microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical dips that can damage the underlying core or remove desirable patination.
