This pair of French Rococo style wall lights dates to 1890 and is fashioned from gilt bronze with a bright gold finish. Each wall sconce takes the form of an asymmetrical backplate decorated with intricate acanthus leaves and scrolling motifs, supporting three scrolling arms equipped with candle sockets and foliate drip pans. The pieces show aged patina across the cast metal surfaces and retain their electrical wiring. Measuring 45 cm high by 27 cm wide excluding the light fittings, these light fixtures suit installation on a narrow wall space in a hallway, bedroom, or living room to provide ambient illumination in a traditional interior setting.

FAQs

French Rococo gilt bronze wall lights, often termed appliques, are characterised by asymmetrical scrolling forms, detailed acanthus leaves, and organic natural motifs developed during the 18th century under Louis XV.

Historically, these sconces were cast from solid bronze using the lost-wax or sand-casting method, then hand-chased for surface texture and finished with mercury gilding, known as ormolu.

Authentic period pieces display crisp hand-chased decorative details, heavy cast bronze weight, original threaded casting joints, and subtle oxidisation or wear to the gilded layer in recessed areas.

These wall lights can be mounted in pairs to flank an overmantel mirror, frame artwork in a dining room, or accent a formal hallway alongside contemporary or traditional furnishings.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding abrasive chemicals, water, or commercial metal polishes that can strip delicate historical gilding.
