This pair of Louis XV style wall sconces originates from 1890 and is executed in gilt bronze with an ormolu finish in a rich gold colour. The design includes ornate asymmetrical acanthus foliage, S-scroll arms, and twin candle nozzles fitted with cream-coloured faux candle tubes. The work displays intricate cast scrollwork, relief mouldings, and naturalistic leaf motifs curving outwards from central backplates. Each sconce measures 40 cm high, 25 cm wide, and 11 cm deep. These light fixtures suit domestic placement in a fireplace alcove, hallway, or living room to add period French Chateau character to interior spaces. The dual-arm configuration provides balanced illumination from each wall fixture. The fixtures operate as hardwired wall-mounted lighting units suitable for traditional or eclectic residential schemes.

Louis XV style wall sconces, often termed appliques or bras de lumiere, are characterised by Rococo design principles originating in 18th-century France. They feature expressive asymmetrical scrolls, acanthus leaf motifs, and naturalistic foliage executed in cast bronze.

Authentic French wall sconces of this period were typically cast in bronze and finished with mercury gilding, known as ormolu, to create a durable golden lustre. Modern reproductions or 19th-century revival pieces often utilise electroplated brass or bronze.

Look for signs of fine hand-chasing on the decorative surfaces, foundry marks, and structural assembly techniques such as hand-cut screws or square nuts on the rear. Genuine gilding displays subtle wear on raised points rather than uniform flaking.

Flank a large gilded mirror, artwork, or fireplace mantelpiece with a pair of gilt sconces to create symmetrical visual anchor points. They work effectively in dining rooms, drawing rooms, or hallways to introduce depth against neutral wall surfaces.

Dust regularly using a dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled artist brush to clean tight crevices. Avoid chemical polishes or abrasive metal cleaners, as these can strip original gilt finishes; persistent grime should be treated by a professional conservator.
