Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

These French wall lights from 1920 take the form of a pair of triple-arm wall sconces in the French Chateau style. They combine carved wood backplates with toleware metal scrolling arms, finished in gilt and terracotta paint over wooden frames. Each backplate displays acanthus leaf cresting, floral carvings, and a leaf-pierced finial at the top. Three candle drippers hold bulb fittings on each sconce, supported by the metal arms extending outwards from the painted and gilded central wooden panels. Measuring 56 cm high, 25 cm wide, and 14 cm deep, these fixtures mount securely to walls in principal reception rooms, hallways, or dining areas. They function particularly well when positioned above a sideboard or flanking a fireplace, providing ambient lighting alongside ornamental wall decoration. The electrical wiring is fully updated for contemporary domestic installation while retaining the original polychrome appearance of the early twentieth-century wooden and metal components.

FAQs

French polychrome wall sconces are wall-mounted lighting fixtures originating in France, distinguished by their multi-coloured painted and gilded surfaces applied over carved wood or metal structure.

These lighting fixtures were traditionally constructed from hand-carved wood or forged metal, coated in layers of gesso, hand-painted pigments, and gold leaf gilding.

Authentic period examples exhibit natural wear to the painted surface, aged gesso underlayers beneath the paint, hand-sculpted details, and evidence of historical candle fitments or early conversion.

Mount sconces in pairs to flank a central focal point such as an overmantel mirror, artwork, or sideboard, adding architectural texture and warm ambient accent lighting.

Maintain polychrome surfaces by dusting gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush or feather duster, avoiding moisture, liquid cleaners, and waxes that can dissolve delicate original paint.
