Victorian silver is characterised by elaborate ornamentation, often drawing inspiration from nature, historical revivals, and classical motifs, reflecting the industrial advancement and middle-class prosperity of the 19th century.

These items were typically crafted from sterling silver using techniques such as casting, hand-chasing, engraving, and pierced work, often bearing traditional British hallmarks indicating the assay office, maker, and year of production.

Authenticity is verified by examining crisp hallmarks, gauge and weight of the metal, wear patterns consistent with age, and the quality of the hand-engraving or repousse work, which machine reproductions cannot accurately replicate.

Antique silver adds a layer of heritage and reflective texture to contemporary spaces and can be displayed in glass cabinets, used on dining tables, or styled on sideboards to create a curated, eclectic aesthetic.

Preservation requires storing silver in tarnish-resistant cloths or bags, washing it by hand with mild soap and warm water when necessary, and avoiding harsh chemical dips or abrasive commercial polishes that can wear away fine engraving.
