During the Victorian era, the rise in correspondence and literacy led to an increase in the production of specialised desk accessories, with paper knives and letter openers becoming standard implements for opening envelopes and cutting uncut pages of books.

These items were frequently crafted from sterling silver, ivory, bone, or mother-of-pearl, often featuring decorative techniques such as guilloche enamel, chasing, and engraving to elevate everyday desk tools into decorative art pieces.

Authentic pieces typically bear British hallmarks stamped into the metal, indicating the assay office, date letter, standard mark for silver purity, and the makers mark, alongside hand-applied enamel work characteristic of the period.

Antique desk items like letter openers add a layer of historical detail and tactile texture when displayed on modern workspaces, open shelving, or coffee tables, contrasting clean lines with traditional craftsmanship.

Silver should be cleaned periodically with a soft polishing cloth specifically formulated for precious metals, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage delicate guilloche enamel sections.
