This mid-century modern floor lamp from the 1950s is an original creation by French designer Rene Mathieu. The piece combines a heavy cast iron circular base with slender black enamelled steel and brass stems, arranged in a multi-arm configuration with three light holders terminating in black cone socket cups. A decorative red resin spike rises centrally among the stems, complemented by polished brass joints and exposed hardware. The lamp stands 139 cm high, 25 cm wide, and 25 cm deep. Positioned in an empty corner of a living room, hallway, or study, this architectural lighting piece provides upward illumination while serving as a sculptural focal point. The mix of dark metal finishes, polished brass accents, and the bright red resin detail suits contemporary interiors favouring authentic mid-century design. The freestanding unit operates with a floor switch connected by a black cord trailing from the base.

French modernist floor lamps from the 1950s are characterised by structural experimentation, incorporating asymmetric brass stems, tripod bases, and sculptural accents reminiscent of the Atomic Age.

Mid-century standard lamps commonly feature tubular brass, enamelled steel, heavy cast iron bases, and accent elements made from painted wood or resin.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate wiring, natural patination on brass elements, heavy cast bases, and distinctive construction details such as tapered metal rods and soldered joints.

Position the lamp in an empty corner or beside an armchair to create a focused reading area that doubles as a striking sculptural statement.

Dust gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoid harsh chemical polishes that strip original lacquer or patina, and ensure electrical fittings are routinely inspected by a qualified electrician.
