Kashmiri lacquerware and painting traditions date back centuries, heavily influenced by Persian and Mughal art forms. Artisans traditionally decorated wood, papier-mache, and other substrates with intricate botanical motifs, creating vibrant pieces intended for both local utility and export.

These items are typically constructed from seasoned wood or compressed papier-mache layers. They are hand-turned on a lathe, sealed, and meticulously painted with natural pigments before receiving a protective lacquer coating.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-mixed mineral or vegetable pigments under an aged, amber-toned lacquer finish. Close inspection often reveals subtle irregularities from hand-painting, wear consistent with age, and traditional joinery or wiring adaptations appropriate to their period.

These items serve as striking accent pieces that bring warmth and global texture to a room. Pair them with neutral lampshades to let the detailed painted motifs stand out on sideboards, side tables, or writing desks.

Keep lacquered woodwork out of direct sunlight to prevent fading of the natural pigments. Dust gently with a dry, soft microfiber cloth and avoid liquid cleaners, chemical polishes, or excessive humidity.
