Description

Ikat is a technique of tie-dying which was developed in Uzbekistan to create a wonderful array of textiles. One sees ikat work primarily on costume and clothing, but it was also used on furnishing items. One of the most attractive aspects of this art form is the daring colour combinations employed by the dyers and weavers . Dating to around 1880, this lovely panel is made up of five colours and certainly lives up to that. The pale green field is filled with flame-like motifs in magenta red each with with yellow, aubergine and magenta details. A blue appears in the centre of the secondary ornaments. It is a striking composition which would make a graphic contribution to any decorative setting. There are a few splits in the fabric so mounting is recommended. This piece would make a stunning piece of wall art.

Date of Manufacture

Aaron Nejad Carpets and Rugs has dated this Antique Silk Ikat to the 1880s.

Central Asian ikat textiles originated along the Silk Road, particularly in present-day Uzbekistan, where master dyers and weavers created highly complex, patterned silk fabrics for garments and home furnishings.

Authentic nineteenth-century ikats are typically woven from hand-reeled silk using a resist-dyeing technique known as tie-dyeing the warp threads before weaving, often utilising natural dyes derived from plants and minerals.

Authentic pieces exhibit characteristic bleeding along the pattern edges due to the resist-dyeing process, alongside irregularities in the hand-woven silk ground and natural botanical or mineral colouration.

Framing an antique textile as wall art or mounting it professionally behind glass allows it to serve as a striking focal point while protecting the delicate historic fibres from environmental damage.

Historic silk should be kept away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and textile degradation, maintained in stable humidity conditions, and handled minimally using clean, dry hands.
