Victorian silver inkstands often combine sterling silver mounts and trays with heavy cut glass, reflecting the ornate and functional design priorities of the late 19th century writing desk.

These pieces typically feature hallmarked sterling silver frames and lids combined with heavy-blown, diamond-cut lead crystal or glass reservoirs to hold liquid ink securely.

Authenticity is verified through clear metal hallmarks indicating the assay office, makers mark, and date letter, alongside period-appropriate hand-cut glass and traditional casting techniques.

Placed upon a study desk or mantelpiece, an antique inkstand adds historical texture and polished metallic contrast to contemporary workspaces or traditional bookshelves.

Maintain the silver using a specialist non-abrasive polish to preserve hallmarks, and clean the glass reservoir with warm soapy water while avoiding harsh chemicals on cemented mounts.
