Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A girandole is a decorative wall mirror featuring one or more attached candle sconces or arms, designed to multiply the flickering light of candles within a room. Originating in 17th-century Europe, they gained immense popularity during the Baroque and Rococo periods for their dramatic visual impact and ability to illuminate darkened drawing rooms.

Traditional girandoles are typically constructed from carved wood, such as pine or lime, which is then gessoed and hand-gilded with thin sheets of metal leaf, such as gold or silver. The mirrored glass plates are often hand-silvered and feature bevelled edges, while the candle arms are crafted from matching carved wood or forged metal.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit signs of age in the wood construction, such as shrinkage cracks, hand-carved tool marks, and minor oxidisation or foxing on the original mirror plates. The gilding often shows wear along high-touch or protruding areas, and the backboards typically consist of aged, hand-planed timber secured with period-appropriate fixings.

These decorative fixtures work well when mounted as a focal point above a mantelpiece, console table, or flanking a large artwork to introduce symmetry and reflective light. Pairing them with contemporary furnishings creates a sophisticated contrast that highlights their intricate craftsmanship without overwhelming the space.

Giltwood surfaces are extremely delicate and sensitive to moisture, direct sunlight, and rapid temperature fluctuations. Dusting should be performed gently using a dry, ultra-soft artists brush or microfiber cloth, avoiding any liquid cleaners, chemical polishes, or abrasive materials that could strip the fragile metallic leaf.
