This Edwardian sugar basket, made in London in 1903 by George Fox, holds a removable ruby red glass liner within a silver-gilt frame. The design includes an openwork pierced lattice, an oval floral medallion with hanging festoons, and a beaded rim below a textured swing handle, supported on a flared, pierced foot. Materials consist of silver-gilt, ruby glass, and metal alloy, displaying a combination of silver, gold, and deep red colour tones. Measuring 19 cm in height with the handle included and 12 cm in diameter, the piece sits comfortably upon a dining room sideboard top or a living room display table in an English Country House setting to hold small items or serve sugar.

A silver gilt sugar basket is a small table vessel crafted from sterling silver finished with a thin layer of gold gilding, designed to hold lump sugar or sweetmeats during tea or dessert services in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

These vessels were crafted using cast and pierced sterling silver frames decorated with scrollwork or foliage, coated in gold leaf or electroplated gold, and fitted with a removable blown-glass liner to protect the metal from acidic contents.

Authentic British pieces feature full hallmark stamps on the silver rim or foot, including the makers mark, lion passant for sterling quality, assay office mark, and date letter, alongside natural surface wear on high-relief areas.

Display the basket on a sideboard, drinks trolley, or dining table as a standalone decorative centrepiece, or utilise it on a dressing table to store small items of jewellery.

Wash the glass liner separately in warm water with mild soap, and gently clean the silver-gilt exterior using a soft cotton cloth, avoiding abrasive silver polishes that can remove the gold layer.
