Description

A stunning, fine and impressive, antique early 19th century 18 carat yellow gold muff chain; part of our diverse antique Georgian jewellery collections.

This exceptional, fine and impressive antique muff chain has been crafted in 18ct yellow gold.

The 47' antique chain consists of twenty-seven finely crafted elongated cuboid links, embellished with impressive engraved decoration.

Each feature link articulates via a fancy array of circular links, creating an interlacing design.

The chain secures with an impressive and original diminutive hand clasp, ornamented with a 0.01ct round faceted ruby to the ring on the index finger; the addition of the gemstone is a fine feature of the piece and indicates the high quality.

By virtue of its length this muff chain in gold may be worn as a one or two strand necklace.

This exceptional Georgian gold chain necklace has been independently tested using state of the art technology (Niton XL2 Analyzer) and verified as 18 carat gold.

This exceptional chain is the finest of its type you could hope to acquire.

NOTE: Muff chains are long chains which were popularised in the 18th century, worn around the neck to secure ladies' muffs. A muff is a cylindrical piece of fur, or other warm material, used to keep hands warm in winter.

Georgian jewellery refers to pieces made during the reigns of the four King Georges in Britain from 1714 to 1830. This period is characterised by hand-crafted items, often featuring foiled stones, closed-back settings, and high-purity gold work crafted before mass industrialisation.

Jewellery from this period frequently utilised 18ct or lower karat yellow gold, silver-topped settings, and hand-cut gemstones. Chains and links were typically handmade individually, soldered, and often featured intricate texturing, chasing, or hollow-tube construction to achieve lightweight length.

Authentic pieces display distinct hand-made characteristics such as irregular link sizing, lack of modern laser soldering, hand-cut components, and often the absence of standard modern hallmarks, relying instead on maker marks or touchmarks characteristic of the period.

Historic necklaces and guard chains can be layered with contemporary minimalist gold chains for a mixed-era aesthetic, or worn doubled up to highlight the length and intricate link patterns against contemporary tailored clothing.

Antique gold pieces should be stored individually in soft pouches to prevent scratching, kept away from harsh ultrasonic cleaners or chemical dips, and cleaned gently with a soft cloth and mild soapy water to preserve their historic patina.
