Pierced silver bowls, often used as sweetmeat or nut dishes, gained popularity in the 18th century and continued through the mid-20th century, utilising techniques like piercing and embossing to create intricate openwork patterns.

These items are crafted from solid sterling silver, typically shaped by pressing or spinning the metal before artisans hand-pierced or punched decorative latticework designs into the walls.

Authentic pieces are identified through official British hallmarking stamps, which include a makers mark, a standard purity mark such as the lion passant for sterling silver, a date letter, and a town mark.

This piece can be utilised as a functional catch-all on a hallway console, styled on a coffee table as a decorative accent, or used traditionally to serve small confections.

Sterling silver should be cleaned periodically using a specialized non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth, then stored in a tarnish-resistant cloth or dry environment when not on display.
