Letter openers, or paper knives, became essential desk accessories during the 18th and 19th centuries as mass correspondence grew, often crafted from silver, ivory, or bone by skilled silversmiths.

They were traditionally fashioned from sterling silver, hallmarked metals, ivory, mother-of-pearl, and sometimes paired with wooden or tortoiseshell handles.

Authenticity is verified by locating official government hallmarks stamped on the metal, which indicate the assay office, date letter, and silver standard, alongside examining wear patterns consistent with age.

Display it atop a stack of hardback books on a coffee table, or rest it on a wooden executive desk to add metallic texture and historical character to a workspace.

Clean periodically with a professional silver polishing cloth to remove tarnish, avoiding abrasive dips, and store in a dry environment away from direct sunlight.
