Description

An absolutely stunning cast top silver George IV pocket snuff box. It was made in Birmingham in 1829 by William Simpson. Simpson was to my mind one of the greatest box makers of the 19th century. His pieces are always of exceptional quality and a deceptively heavy weight. This one has a running Hare on the top along with engraved and cast leaves and swags. It is in excellent condition with no issues and a great piece to add to any collection.

A George IV silver snuff box is a small pocket-sized container produced during the reign of King George IV, specifically designed to hold ground tobacco known as snuff for discrete consumption during social gatherings.

These boxes were traditionally crafted from sterling silver, often featuring detailed repousse work, chased decoration, engine-turned patterns, and gilt interiors to protect the metal from the acidic properties of tobacco.

Authenticity is primarily verified through clear hallmarks stamped on the metal, which typically include the assay office mark, standard mark, date letter, and makers mark, alongside period-accurate construction techniques such as tight-fitting hinges.

Antique snuff boxes can be displayed as curated tabletop objects on a bookshelf, coffee table, or desk, often placed upon a stack of art books or within a small display tray to highlight their metallic finish and intricate craftsmanship.

Preservation requires storing items in a dry, temperature-controlled environment and cleaning them infrequently with a specialist non-abrasive silver cloth to maintain the desirable natural patina without wearing away the delicate engraving.
