Pocket-sized containers for spirits evolved from medieval flasks and rose to prominence during the 18th and 19th centuries, becoming an essential accessory for travellers, hunters, and sportsmen.

Traditional flasks were typically crafted from heavy-gauge sterling silver, often featuring hand-soldered seams, captive screw caps, and detachable lower drinking cups lined with gilt wash.

Authentic pieces bear stamped assay office marks, makers initials, and a standard mark such as a lion passant for sterling silver, which indicate the date and place of manufacture.

These metallic accessories add a touch of polished heritage when displayed on a bar cart, bookshelf, or desk alongside other curiosities.

Silver should be cleaned infrequently with a non-abrasive microfibre cloth and specialized silver polish to maintain the metals patina and prevent wear to the hallmark stamps.
