This mid-nineteenth-century Danish bookcase is constructed from warm brown mahogany with flame veneer. The upper section has a glazed double-door display cabinet, a hidden drawer beneath the overhanging cornice, and applied scrollwork carvings at the corners and around the keyhole. The lower section comprises a solid top with a carved edge and double cupboard doors featuring elaborate applied relief swags and carved decoration. Four heavily carved feet support the base, while structural details include age shrinkage between the timber planks on the sides, minor losses on the cornice, and restoration work. Measuring 186.7 cm high, 118 cm wide and 50.8 cm deep, the two-part piece stands tall in a gentleman's library or study to house books and display collections behind glass panels while keeping reference volumes stored out of sight below.

Mid-19th century Danish bookcases often blend Scandinavian Biedermeier influences with Historicism, featuring rich mahogany veneers, glass-fronted upper sections, and elaborate hand-carved detailing on the lower cabinet panels.

Cabinetmakers during this era utilised flame mahogany veneers laid over solid pine or oak carcasses, hand-cut dovetail joints, glass panes, and intricate solid mahogany relief carvings.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-accurate construction signs, including hand-sawn backboards, original brass locks, age-related wood shrinkage, and hand-carved ornamentation.

Position the cabinet against a neutral wall in a study or dining room, balancing its visual weight by combining books with contemporary ceramic decorative objects.

Dust regularly using a soft lint-free cloth and apply high-quality beeswax polish annually, keeping the item away from direct heat sources to prevent wood movement.
