Description

This is an excellent piece of solid sterling silver craftsmanship by the great Paul Storr.

It is clearly hallmarked for London 1824 and each separate piece carries a full set of those hallmarks. The circular base has a gadrooned border and a central baluster socket with gadrooned detachable nozzle. The loop handle supports the tapering extinguisher, complete with beautiful finial. The base, nozzle and extinguisher are each engraved with an unusual crest.

Paul Storr (28 October 1770 – 18 March 1844 ) was one of the most talented silversmiths of the late Georgian period. Today his legacy of exceptionally well crafted silver can be found worldwide in museums and private collections.

Chambersticks first made an appearance in the 17th century. Originally they were made in sets for each member of the household. They were used for lighting the way to bed and because of the movement created when they were carried about they needed a large drip pan to catch the wax. The design evolved over the years and from the mid 18th century onwards they usually had a matching conical snuffer, although from about 1790 onwards some were made with an aperture at the base of the stem to take a pair of scissor snuffers.

A chamberstick is a low-profile portable candlestick fitted with a pan to catch dripping wax, historically used to light a path through dark hallways and bedrooms before the invention of electric lighting.

They were traditionally crafted from sterling silver using techniques such as casting, raising, and hammering, often featuring applied silver wire borders and removable conical snuffers.

Authenticity is determined by examining hallmarks stamped on the metal, checking for makers marks, evaluating weight and gauge of the silver, and identifying period-appropriate wear and construction methods.

An antique chamberstick can be displayed on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or coffee table to add metallic sheen and historical contrast to contemporary minimalist or transitional schemes.

Antique silver should be cleaned infrequently using a non-abrasive silver cloth or specialist polish to preserve the patina, and stored in a low-humidity environment away from direct sunlight.
