Description

A very smart and well made antique Edwardian inlaid mahogany open bookcase. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1900-1910 period.

It is of superb quality, it is very sturdy and heavy. The mahogany has a gorgeous colour tone and patina, there is inlaid satin wood cross banding on the top edges and inlaid satin wood borders down the front edges. The three shelves are adjustable, there is plenty of storage space inside.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age, with just some extremely minor wear remaining beneath the polish here and there.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Edwardian furniture, produced during the reign of King Edward VII from 1901 to 1910, typically features lighter proportions, refined craftsmanship, and inspiration from earlier Georgian and Sheraton revivals.

Cabinet makers of this era predominantly utilised high-grade timbers such as mahogany, satinwood, and walnut, frequently incorporating delicate wood stringing and marquetry inlays.

Authenticity can be verified by examining traditional construction methods, such as dovetail joints, hand-cut timber panels, uniform ageing of the polish, and absence of modern fixings.

An antique bookcase adds warmth and character to contemporary spaces when balanced with neutral walls, carefully curated book arrangements, and minimal decorative accessories.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, and nourish the surface periodically with traditional beeswax.
