Silver tankards originated as large drinking vessels for ale and beer, evolving from wooden and leather precursors into status symbols crafted by silversmiths for affluent households and corporate guilds during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

Authentic period tankards are crafted from solid sterling silver, often shaped using traditional raising and spinning techniques, featuring soldered handles and heavy footed bases to ensure structural stability.

Authenticity is verified through clear hallmarks stamped on the metal, which typically include a makers mark, standard mark indicating sterling purity, assay office town mark, and a date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture.

This piece can be displayed on an open bookshelf, used as a sculptural vase for floral arrangements, or integrated into a bar cart arrangement to introduce metallic contrast and historical character.

Preservation involves regular dusting with a soft cloth, occasional cleaning with a specialist non-abrasive silver polish to manage tarnish, and storing in a dry environment away from direct sunlight and humidity.
